Why can't last name be blank?

Last week I had a problem with multiple contacts with last name as "unnamed", and no first name. In this case, my phone thought that they were all one single contact, and merged them all during sync.

The contacts didn't have first or last name because they are names of companies, not of people.

Later on I removed the "unnamed", and left both first and last names empty, and it worked fine.

Today I added a new company contact, but now memotoo want either first or last name. Is this new? Why?

So I added the company name to the first name, but it wasn't enough. Memotoo demanded a last name.

I ended up adding the company name in the last name, but I don't understand this need.

It started when I had several contacts with "Unnamed" as last name, probably happened during sync between old phone/memotoo/new phone. So when I tried removing "Unnamed", it didn't let me and said a last name was needed. But I added a new contact with no name now, just company, and it accepted it. Weird, but OK now.
